I used Kathryn Otoshi’s picture book, One, as the cornerstone of discussions and explorations into equity, justice, empathy, compassion, and empowerment in a classroom of four and five-year-olds, returning again and again to the questions, “Does everyone count?”.

I demonstrated to children as young as three that they are writers and creators of stories by utilizing a beloved story, Stop That Pickle, and a study of familiar fairytale variations to prompt children to invent their own sequels.

A new school with limited funding and revolutionary ideas requires everyone to wear a lot of different hats and be able to pivot at a moment's notice. I wore a lot of those hats, sometimes many simultaneously.
